Taj Mahal, troubadour of African-American roots music, will perform in Knoxville tonight at the Bijou Theatre.
Taj is a self-taught musician who plays over 20 instruments - including slide guitar, piano, harmonica, bass and banjo - and has maintained a strong musical career for the past 35 years.
His music is strongly grounded in the blues, but also integrates jazz, R&B, zydeco and Caribbean.
Among those who have had the honor of playing with Mahal are Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, Bob Marley and the Rolling Stones.
Thirty-six albums and six Grammy nominations can be called his, and he isn't stopping anytime soon.
Mahal's incessant North American tour stops in Knoxville tonight at the Bijou Theatre. He will be playing with his band, The Taj Mahal Trio. The show starts at 7:30. Tickets are $29.50.
