KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - In response to concerns expressed by the leadership of
the Student Government Association, the Division of Information
Infrastructure announced its new Student Support Line service.

"Given the loss of employees and computer assistance, this is a big step
toward providing the technical support that students need. I applaud the
Division of Information Infrastructure for their fast action and for these
viable solutions to what was an alarming problem," said Jason Little, SGA

The employees who remain after the reduction in force which was announced
May 16 will staff this effort. "Enabling students to graduate with good
computer skills is critical to placing them in top-quality jobs," said Dr.
Jose-Marie Griffiths, vice chancellor for Information Infrastructure. "We
will be calling on our staff to provide this service in addition to and,
therefore, at the expense of their other responsibilities," she said.

The Division recently laid off 55 employees, many of whom had staffed the
former Help Desk. "Since May 16, telephone support has been virtually
non-existent," said John Jarrard, director of Computing and Administrative
Systems. "This will help."

hours will be from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through
Friday, beginning June 19.
