A UT sophomore was killed early Tuesday morning in a shooting at The
Underground, 214 W. Jackson Ave.
At approximately 3:13 a.m. on Tuesday Sept. 8, Knoxville Police Department
officers arrived at the night club after a report gunshots during an
altercation between an employee and several patrons, according to KPD
Michael Wayne Gardner, a 27-year-old resident of 831 Maplehurst Court,
suffered fatal gun wounds and was reportedly dead when officers reached the
scene. Gardner was an employee of The Underground.
Two others were involved in the shooting, but did not sustain
Sergeant Dan Brock, KPD Major Crimes Unit, reported that four suspects were
identified by witnesses in the shooting. The suspects were described as
four young black males, between the ages of 18-20 years old, wearing black
pants and bright shirts.
No other information was made available by the KPD.
