Although J. Wade Gilley has already taken office as president of the

University of Tennessee, Gov. Don Sundquist will inaugurate him into the

position on Friday, Nov. 5.

As the chairman for the UT Board of Trustees, Sundquist is charged with

officially swearing Gilley in at a public ceremony in Thompson-Boling

Arena

"We could not get all of the people who needed to be present until that

time," said Sammie Lynn Puett, vice president of the institute of public

service.

An entire day of activities is already being planned as part of the

ceremonial celebration for the Gilley. Many university presidents from

across the country are expected to attend the event, Puett said.

Prior to the official ceremony, James Buchanan, a UT alumni who won the

Nobel Prize in economics, will be giving the inaugural lecture in the

University Center, Puett said. Buchanan is also a personal friend of

President Gilley, Puett said.

Gilley took office on Aug. 1, taking over for Joe Johnson. Gilley served

as president of Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va. for eight years

before coming to UT.
