HILO, Hawaii - Chris Burke's record-tying six hits paced the University of
Tennessee's 23-hit attack as the Volunteers defeated the University of
Hawaii at Hilo 18-3 in collegiate baseball at Wong Stadium.
The series ends with a 10 a.m. doubleheader at the Kailua-Kona Baseball
Field on Saturday, February 12.
The Vulcans (7-10) had 10 hits and committed four errors. The Vols (6-1)
had no errors.
Brandon Hopkins was hit by a pitch and stole second base in the second. He
scored on Ryan Moffett's single to center. Moffett stole second but was
thrown out on Kris Bennett's shot back at the pitcher. Chris Burke followed
with his 100th career base hit and moved Bennett to third. Stevie Daniel's
double drove in both Burke and Bennett to set a 3-0 Volunteer lead.
Keola Park opened the Vulcan's second with a double and scored on Kevin
Yee's single to center.
The Volunteers knocked Vulcan starting pitcher Joe Bell out of the game
with consecutive singles by Ryan Case, Hopkins and Justin Parker to open
the third. Vulcan reliever Tyler Kerlee didn't fare any better as he was
welcomed by Moffett's second single of the night, Bennett's home run, and
Burke's inside-the-park home run. Following a walk to Daniel and single to
Jeff Christensen, Kerlee sat down the next three batters.
Mike Hobbs singled and moved to third on Jake Ryan's double in the third.

The Vols added solo home runs in the fourth by Moffett and in the fifth by
Christensen. Also in the fifth, Massey singled, moved up on Case's single
and a hit batter. He scored on Parker's fly out to left.
The fireworks continued in the sixth as Burke singled and scored on
Christensen's second consecutive home run giving the Vols 14 runs on 19
Following a fly out, Case was hit by a pitch. On the next pitch, Vulcan
pitcher Shaun Suzuki was ejected by the plate umpire for sailing a pitch
over the batter's head. Following a short but direct protest, Vulcan
baseball coach Joey Estrella was also ejected.
In the seventh, Burke tied a Volunteer record with six hits in a game with
an RBI double. Bennett was hit by a pitch, moved up on a balk and scored on

Moffett, Bennett and Case had three hits apiece, while Daniel and Parker
had two each for the Volunteers. Burke, Moffett, Christensen and Case had
three RBIs each.
