Jordan DeJong hurled a complete game five-hitter to lead Tennessee to a 5-3
win over the Citadel in Game 9 of the 2000 Winn-Dixie Shootout held at
Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.
The Volunteers (8-4) broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning with four runs on
just one hit. Kris Bennett highlighted the frame with an RBI single while
the Bulldogs committed two errors.
The Bulldogs (4-2) scored twice in the ninth on a Daryl Byrd RBI single and
a Tennessee error to account for the final margin.
The Citadel took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Dallas McPherson singled,
stole second base, advanced to third and scored on a pair of Volunteer
errors. In the top of the sixth, Bennett's run-scoring single plated Stevie
Daniel to knot the game.
DeJong (2-1) went the distance, allowing five hits and one earned run while
fanning nine and walking three. Bulldog reliever Randy Corn (0-1) suffered
the loss by giving up one hit and one earned run in 1/3 of an inning. Kyle
Bunn started for the Citadel, working seven complete innings and
surrendering six hits and one earned run.
Bennett collected two hits and two RBI for Tennessee while Daniel scored
two runs.
Tennessee takes on the College of Charleston Monday at 2 p.m. Information
concerning the game was not available at press time.
