MARYVILLE (AP) - A Friendsville man fatally shot his terminally ill wife and then killed himself early Sunday morning at Blount Memorial Hospital, authorities said.
Russell Chambers Jr., 66, shot Janet Chambers, 65, in the head with a .38-caliber pistol at about 12:30 a.m. in a private room of the coronary rehabilitation unit. Chambers then shot himself in the head, Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said.
On Saturday, Janet Chambers learned she would not recover from an unspecified illness, Crisp said. Russell Chambers had stayed with his wife for several days in the hospital, he said.
"The husband couldn't stand by to see her in pain," Crisp said. "He had a plan."
Relatives told Crisp the shooting was a surprise to them.
The hospital has security but does not use metal detectors, Blount Memorial spokeswoman Gina Stafford said. Stafford said Sunday new security measures already planned before the shooting are being implemented.
