WELLSBORO, Pa. - A 12-year-old who committed suicide in a middle school restroom had brought more than one gun to school but only fired the shot that killed him, authorities said.
Police have not said why the boy, a fifth-grader, might have shot himself. Friday is the last day of classes at the school before the summer break.
Wellsboro Police Chief Tom Young said the boy brought multiple guns, including a rifle, to school Wednesday in a large duffel bag. Students were allowed to bring duffel bags Wednesday because of an end-of-the-year field trip to an area swimming pool.
The school does not have metal detectors.
The boy was alone in a first-floor restroom until about 8 a.m., when another student saw the boy removing guns from the duffel bag and told a teacher. Police were approaching the bathroom about 20 minutes later when they heard a shot and found the boy with a single gunshot wound.
