KPD responded to an altercation at the Hollywood Ballroom early Sunday morning that injured three Knoxville police officers and resulted in the arrest of several people for public intoxication and disorderly conduct by fighting.
The arrested included two Carson-Newman College football players, according to Sgt. Tom Fox of the KPD.
Fox said the KPD responded to the call at 214 W. Jackson Ave. around 2:20 a.m. Sunday.
"There were several parties going on on different floors of the building," Fox said. "Officers heard what they believed to be shots fired inside the building."
Officers looked around but were unable to see where the shots came from, Fox said. After the area was checked, Fox said no injuries were reported due to gun fire.
Several large fights then broke out, and KPD requested additional assistance from the KPD, Knox County Sheriff's Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol and UTPD.
"There was a very large crowd that didn't want to leave," Fox said. "That's why additional units were requested, to help break up the crowd."
Several people reported to the police department that they had been assaulted, according to Fox.
Units were able to restore order after 30 to 45 minutes.
The business was cited by the KPD for having an unruly business and by the fire marshall for being over capacity for having too many people inside, Fox said.
The three Knoxville police officers injured in the incident were treated and released, Fox said.
