MEMPHIS - A woman found dead in an abandoned Memphis house on Friday has been identified as the missing cousin of a woman also discovered dead a week ago.
Lashonia Austin, 24, was found Friday afternoon by a passer-by, Memphis police Lt. Joe Scott told The Commercial Appeal newspaper.
"Someone was walking by and noticed the door was open to that residence," Scott said.
The decomposed body, clad in jeans and a T-shirt, had a gunshot wound to the head, he said.
Police had searched for Austin, of Batesville, Miss., since her cousin, Sherlena Burgess, 23, was found fatally shot near a cemetery on Sept. 14. Burgess was found about four blocks from where Austin was located.
The two disappeared after a night out Sept. 13 in Memphis.
Burgess and Austin were last seen at about 4 a.m. Sept. 14 at a parking garage near the Peabody Hotel. Burgess's blue Ford Taurus was discovered at the garage.
Police received a call from Burgess's boyfriend the afternoon of Sept. 14. The man, whose named was not disclosed by authorities, said Burgess called him early in the morning and said she was at a restaurant in Memphis.
Memphis police have taken a tape from the restaurant's surveillance camera, along with tapes from downtown establishments, but have made no arrests in the slayings.
