KNOXVILLE (AP) - A federal jury ruled for the Roane County Sheriff's Department in a lawsuit over the death of an inmate from a drug overdose.
After a two-day trial, a federal jury determined the agency was not responsible for the June 2000 death of inmate George William Humphreys, 35.
Humphreys' family filed the lawsuit, alleging jailers ignored Humphreys' medical condition and that the department's "deliberate indifference to a serious medical problem resulted in death."
The family said Humphreys, arrested for driving under the influence and drug possession following a traffic crash, wasn't given enough attention for his injuries and condition.
The jailer had directions from a doctor to watch Humphreys closely, according to court records. He was found dead in the jail the morning after he was incarcerated.
