State Sen. Tim Burchett, R-Knoxville, presented a bill Tuesday outlining requirements that public university officials immediately notify local law enforcement of the death of students or a report alleging any degree of rape.
Burchett is hoping for the most thorough investigations possible, according to a Feb. 23 press release.
"We must ensure that thorough investigations occur on our college and university campuses in the event that a serious crime is committed. We are continuing to make every effort to put adequate laws on the books in order to provide a safer and more secure environment for college students," Burchett said.
The legislation named the Campus Crime Scene Bill was presented before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The bill would require universities to designate a person to notify law enforcement in the event that the chief security officer is absent at the time of the event.
A violation of this bill would be a Class C misdemeanor.
