The East Tennessee Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the School of Journalism and Electronic Media are co-sponsoring "The Patriot Act and Civil Liberties in an Age of Terrorism," today at 7:30 p.m. in room 27 of the Alumni Memorial Gym.
The session features world-renowned First Amendment experts Jane Kirtley and Anthony Lewis.
Kirtley has been the Silha Professor of Media Ethics and Law at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota since August 1999. She speaks frequently on the First Amendment and freedom of information issues, both in the United States and abroad.
Lewis is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, who retired in 2002 after more than 50 years in journalism, most of it while at The New York Times. Both awards came as a result of his coverage of the federal government in 1955 and 1963. He was the first non-lawyer to receive the American Law Institute's Henry Friendly Medal.
