According to KPD Public Information Officer Darryl Debusk, an officer overheard gunfire while on routine patrol around 3:44 a.m. and responded with backup. Once in the area the officers saw an individual with a gun, later identified as Ahmad Wells, 24, who proceeded to run when officers attempted to take him into custody.
During the pursuit, Wells turned and fired multiple shots at the officers. The officers fired back at Wells, but no one was shot. Wells fired all of his rounds and fled again, but was stopped by a fence, Debusk said.
Wells was then taken into custody and transported to KPD for questioning. Debusk said that criminal charges will be filed Thursday, along with a KPD internal affairs investigation, which is standard when officers engage firearms.
