The Daily Beacon finished in third place for Best All Around Daily Newspaper in the Mark of Excellence Awards during the Society of Professional Journalists' Region 3 Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Saturday.
The Independent Florida Alligator, the student newspaper at the University of Florida, took first place for Best All Around newspaper, and The Red & Black, the newspaper at the University of Georgia, took second. The Beacon tied with the University of South Florida's Oracle for third.
Former Beacon sports editor Brett Edgerton won first place in the Sports Column Writing category and second place with two entries in Sports Writing. Beacon photo editor Laura Headlee won first place in Sports Photography, and Beacon editor Christy Banks placed second in the Editorial Writing category.
SPJ presents Mark of Excellence Awards annually to honor student journalists in 45 categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism. Regional first-place winning entries are forwarded to the national competition, which is in New York City Sept. 9 through Sept. 11.
