UT Police Chief August Washington announced Thursday he will be leaving Knoxville to serve at Vanderbilt University.
Washington has been named Vanderbilt’s chief of police and assistant vice chancellor after a nationwide search.
“We will be sad to see him leave,” UTPD Lt. Emily Simerly said, “but it is a great opportunity and we wish him the best.”
Washington has served as the head of the UTPD since 2005.
Simerly said an interim chief will be appointed after Washington departs on July 26. The department will then begin a search for a new police chief.
