National football signing day was Wednesday, and Tennessee (as of Thursday
afternoon) has reportedly signed a total of 19 athletes -- including some
of the top football players in the region and the country.
A few of the signees and some of their accomplishments include:
Brian Darden -- back (6-0, 190), Vicksburg, Miss. (Warren Central
HS), was ranked by recruiting analyst Max Emfinger as the number one
running back in the nation. Darden is a consensus All-American, and a
member of Blue Chip Illustrated's Dream Team -- among a myriad of
other accolades. Darden set a school record, running for 4,919 career yards
at Warren. In his senior season, Darden tallied 2,238 yards and 29
Darden's signing is significant due to the graduation of both James Stewart
and Aaron Hayden.
Al Wilson -- back (6-0, 220), Jackson (Jackson Central Merry HS).
Wilson was courted by Lou Holtz and Notre Dame, but chose Tennessee because
of proximity. Wilson is a Blue Chip Illustrated All-American and the
number two rated strong safety by Emfinger. Also named an All-American by
Superprep and recruiting analyst Tom Lemming.
During his senior season at JCM, Wilson rushed for 1,160 and 15 touchdowns
as a running back -- including an 11.5 yard/carry average. As a linebacker,
Wilson tallied 163 tackles his senior season (77 solo).
Chad Clifton -- lineman (6-7, 292), Martin (Martin Westview HS).
Clifton was another highly recruited lineman, including a late visit from
Alabama head coach Gene Stallings. Clifton was named as the nation's top
offensive tackle by Emfinger and is a Parade Magazine All-American.
He was also named to Bluechip's Dream Team and was rated as their
number five offensive lineman.
Chad Henderson -- lineman (6-4, 235), Fayetteville (Lincoln Co. HS).
Henderson was a member of the ESPN Super 25 team as well as Blue
Chip''s Dream Team.
During his tenure at Lincoln Co., Henderson accrued 277 tackles, 99
assists, 10 sacks, 18 tackles for a loss, five fumble recoveries, two
interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns as a three-year starter.
Spencer Riley -- lineman (6-4, 273), New Market (Jefferson Co. HS).
Rated as Emfinger's number three defensive tackle and is a member of the
Blue Chip Illustrated All-American and Dream Teams.
Volunteers sign 19 new recruits
