The ninth-ranked Tennessee baseball team used the momentum it picked up in
last weekend's sweep of SEC foe Arkansas to knock off ETSU 8-3 at Lindsey
Nelson Stadium on Wednesday.
Each Volunteer starter collected at least one hit, including a big day from
All-American and National Player of the Week Todd Helton, who went 2-for-3
with two doubles and two RBI's. Bryce Christensen, hitting ahead of Helton,
went 3-for-5 with one run scored.
Ryan Meyers (3-1) picked up the win for the Vols, despite pitching only
three innings -- as Meyers' three-inning performance was predetermined by
the Vol coaching staff. Meyers gave up only one hit, no runs, while walking
two and striking out four.
Travis Exum made his team-leading 12th appearance in the fourth inning.
Exum went three innings -- allowing four hits, two runs, one walk, and
struck out four. Joe Nadeau made his first appearance since March 17,
pitching two innings, giving up one run on four hits. Senior Brad Greene
mopped up the ninth, retiring the Buccaneers three up and three down.
The first big rally for Tennessee came in the third inning with the Vols
already leading 1-0, when Helton delivered a two-run double to left-center
field, scoring both Matt Whitley and Bryce Christensen. Helton would later
advance to third on a throwing error and score on a sacrifice fly.
The Bucs battled back in the fourth, putting two runs across the board on a
two-out single by Len Hart, the No. 9 hitter.
Tennessee would return the the favor in the bottom of the inning, scoring
three runs with the help of two-base throwing error by ETSU third baseman
Brandon Katz, scoring Travis Copley and Scott Viera.
Tennessee (20-5) returns to SEC action this weekend as they travel to
Auburn to take on the No. 6 Tigers. The Tigers, like the Vols, are coming
off a weekend, SEC sweep. Auburn took three in Athens, against Georgia.
Game times for this weekend are: 8 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m.
on Sunday. R.A. Dickey is expected to get the start on Friday, followed by
John Alkire, and Ryan Meyers.
