For the second week in a row, the University of Tennessee women's track and

field team will travel to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in an indoor meet at

Virginia Tech's Rector Fieldhouse.

On Friday and Saturday, the 14-member Lady Volunteer contingent will take

part in the 25-team, non-scoring Pepsi Indoor Invitational.

The event gets started today at 5 p.m., as several field and running events

are slated for the evening. Among the competitions UT will be entered in on

the opening day will be the pole vault (Tracy Carrington/Beth Gehring),

weight throw (Andrea Pappas/Diane Slinden), triple jump (Marquita Knight),

60-meter hurdles prelims (Frenke Bolt/Erica Witter), 60-meter dash prelims

(Kelli White/Heather Sumpter) and distance medley relay.

In the vault, Gehring will be trying to improve upon her school and track

record clearance of 11-9 3/4. which she achieved last weekend in a

first-place finish at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg. Bolt

and White, meanwhile, will be trying to once again claim first-place

finishes in the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash, respectively, as they

did one week ago.

Saturday's agenda, which cranks up at 10 a.m., features the finals of the

60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles, as well as UT entrants in the high jump

(Bolt), shot put (Pappas/Slinden), 3000-meter run (Sharon Dickie/Angie

Pothier), 400-meter dash (Lesly Love/Janelle Briggs), 200-meter dash

(White, Sumpter, Witter, Bolt, Knight) and 4x400-meter relay (to be

announced). Bolt, Pappas, White and the 4x400-meter combination of Witter,

Briggs, White and Love were victorious in those same events last


UT enters the Pepsi Indoor Invitational with two provisional qualifiers

thus far. Both Gehring and Carrington met the standby standards for the

NCAA Indoor Championships with a clearance of 11-5 3/4 on Jan. 16.

Of course, Gehring went on to win with a vault four inches higher, while

Carrington took second after failing to get over the bar at 11-9 3/4. In
