The University of North Carolina women's tennis team narrowly missed

beating its second top-25 team in three days Sunday when Tennessee won a

hard-fought 5-4 match over the Tar Heels.

The 26th-ranked Lady Vols won three of six singles matches as they won the

indoor match at UNC's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

The Lady Vols clinched the match at No. 3 doubles when Agnes Wiski and Dana

Noel triumphed over UNC's Cena Hawkins and Jeni Burneette 8-6.

UNC coach Roland Thornqvist's Tar Heels fell to 3-2 with the loss.

Alison Ojeda, Emily Woodside and Noel notched the singles victories for


Tennessee's other doubles victory came courtesy of Ojeda and Candy Reid,

8-1, over Courtney Zalinski and Caroline Hill.

Lady Vols drop tough one to No. 2 Arizona

Toni Mascarenas' single up the middle scored Katie Swan from second base

and gave No. 2 Arizona a 3-1 victory over Tennessee (5-5) and the

championship of the Arizona Wildcat Classic.

The Lady Vols took a 1-0 lead in the first when Lisa Warren led off with a

walk, was sacrificed to second and scored on Carrie Swinford's single to

left. UA tied the game in the third when Lauren Bauer tripled to center

after Mascarenas had singled.

Arizona added an insurance run in the sixth inning on Teresa Ayoub's

pinch-hit sacrifice fly.

Becky Lemke (10-1) earned the victory for Arizona with a five-hitter. She

struck out eight and walked two.

Arizona improved to 18-1.
