Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington, senior diver Gabi Chereches and
former Vol Evan Stewart will participate in the upcoming Summer Olympics in
Chereches will represent his native Romania for the third time. He competed
in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. Chereches, the reigning SEC Diver of
the Year, qualified for the games based on his performance at the recent
European Championships where he finished ninth in platform diving despite
nursing an injured ankle.
Former Vol and two-time NCAA Champion Stewart will represent his native
Zimbabwe for the third time. Stewart, who also won the 1994 World
Championship one-meter title competed in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic
Parrington is also making his third appearance at the Olympics. Parrington,
also a native of Zimbabwe, competed in the 1980 games as an athlete and
served as coach for Zimbabwe in 1996. Parrington is a five-time SEC Diving
Coach of the Year.
