With seven holes bordering the Caribbean Sea, it would be difficult to
picture the Teeth of the Dog golf course as having much bite.
But the Lady Vol golf team hit the links at the Casa de Campo Ladies
Invitational in the Dominican Republic and faced a few challenges - the
swift ocean breezes and stiff competition from several top-25 teams.
Tennessee proved its strength on Saturday to finish in fourth place after
54 holes in just two days.
The Lady Vols carded a collective score of 311 in the final round, the
second-lowest team total of the day, and UT finished with a tournament
total of 948.
Sophomore Young-A Yang blazed through the fairways, carding a one-over 73
in the third round. She improved on her second-round score of 82 to end
tied for third at 229. Her 73 was also the lowest round of the day and the
second lowest of the tournament.
Yang wasn't the only Lady Vol to finish strong. Sophomore Tina Schneeberger
also recovered from Friday's 36 holes and windy conditions to shoot a
two-over 74 in the final round. She finished in eighth place at 231
(78-79-74). Freshman Erin Simmons carded 81-79-79=239, junior Anna Umemura
rounded the course with rounds of 83-81-85=249, and sophomore Carrie Cole
finished the tournament at 83-82-87=252.
The team title went to top-ranked Duke (918), which held the lead
throughout the event. Auburn freshman Danielle Downey (222) captured her
second individual title of the year with a two-stroke win over Duke
sophomore Beth Bauer (224).
The 17th-ranked Lady Vols will make a quick turn-around this week after a
day at the beach as they regroup and head to South Carolina for the Lady
Gamecock Classic, March 17-19 at The University Club golf course.
The Pete Dye-designed Teeth of the Dog layout is currently ranked 28th
among the world's top 100 courses by Golf Magazine. The publication
also rated the par-3 seventh hole as one of the "Top 100 Holes of the
World." Seven holes are situated along the Caribbean Sea, and the course is
part of a larger Casa de Campo resort.
