Tennessee divers Gabi Chereches and Shannon Roy qualified for the NCAA

Championships with their performances this weekend at the NCAA Zone B

qualifying meet in Auburn, Ala.

Chereches posted a third-place finish in the platform diving event and an

eighth-place finish in the one-meter diving event. Those strong

performances and a sixth-place finish in the three-meter dive will send the

junior from Romania to the NCAA meet for the third time in three

years.

Chereches, the SEC three-meter and platform diving champion the past two

seasons, has earned All-America honors at the past two NCAA meets.

Shannon Roy's top finish came in the one-meter event with a sixth place

score of 509.30. Roy also finished 16th in the platform event and ninth in

the three-meter event on Friday. The junior from Australia has competed at

the past two NCAA meets, earning All-American honors at the 1998

meet.

The 2000 swimming and diving championships will be held in Minneapolis on

March 23-25. Tennessee will send 14 athletes and one alternate to compete

in the meet.

Also, junior Lizzy Flint will return to the national meet. Flint claimed

first place on the platform diving Saturday with a score of 458.50.
