On Oct. 14 in Clemson, S.C., the Lady Vol rowing team competed at the Head of Lake Hartwell against Duke and Clemson in three races.
UT's Varsity 4+ shells took home a first, a second and a third in two different races. The Varsity 4+ team of Shannon McMahon, Lauren Kueck, Grace Harrington, Joyce Kranzke and Kristen Logan took home second in their race with a time of 22.49. Right behind them was the crew of Erika Twedt, Kacey Montgomery, Ginny Bradley, Tammy Horton and Erin Artz with the time of 22.51. In the second Varsity 4+ race UT's squad of Elizabeth Humberd, Kelly Kraiss, Kay Logan, Ashley Smith and Marie Hanscom captured first place in 23.30. In sixth place in 25.10 was the crew of Twedt, Tori VonderAhe, Claire Newton, Kate Kelsey and Amber Williams.
In the Varsity 8+ race the team of McMahon, Kueck, Montgomery, Hanscom, Harrington, Smith, Logan, Kelsey and Horton finished in third place with a time of 20:18.00 close to 30 seconds behind the Duke and Clemson boats which clocked in at 19:47.00 and 19:56.00, respectively. Finishing in a tie for fourth with a time of 20:57.00 was the crew of Twedt, Bradley, Kristen Logan, Kranzke, Newton, Kraiss, Sally BeVille, VonderAhe and Williams.
The Lady Vols also had two boats compete in the Novice 8+ race. The Jenny Oliver, Kelly Hotaling, Humberd, Stacey Beyer, Rachael Gammon, Heather Hudson, Brenna McDonald, Keri Meslar, Amy McIntosh team finished their race in 26.44 to finish in sixth. The other Novice 8+ boat of Artz, Michelle Higdon, Rebecca Davenport, Denise Caldwell, Catherine Angel, Whitney Porter, Katie McKissick, Davida Lopez, MaryBeth Lewis captured fifth in a time of 26.17.
The Lady Vol rowing team is off next week and will be back on the water Oct. 28 at the Head of the Tennessee.
Rowers have strong showing in S.C.
