FAIRFAX, Va. Carolyn Marin scored at the 79:20 mark to lift the George Mason women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Tennessee Friday afternoon at GMU Stadium.
Forward Katy Robertson dribbled down the left side and fed Megan Hawkins at the top of the penalty box. Hawkins drilled a shot into the cross bar and Marin stuck in the rebound for the only goal of the contest.
It was Patriot goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin's second complete game shutout of the season. She finished the game with five saves.
Mason controlled the play in the first half and had a couple of scoring opportunities. Vol goalkeeper Ellen Dean kept UT in the game, making diving stops on shots from Angela Lombardi and Jayme Beamer.
The second half was tough for the Lady Vols after the wind began gusting, making it hard for UT to clear the ball from its own end. Tennessee did have four corner kicks in the second frame, but failed to find the back of the net.
GMU outshot the Lady Vols 14-10.
With the loss, Tennessee drops to 2-4 on the year.
