The University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team finished their weekend at the Furman Fall Classic with a strong showing as freshman Brooke Cordell of Soddy Daisy and sophomore Crystal Cleveland of Delray Beach, Fla., won the championship match of their respective flights on Sunday.
Cleveland was crowned champion of the fifth flight while Cordell remains undefeated in collegiate play, taking the sixth flight championship. In their final matches, Cleveland outplayed Tamara Sutton of South Carolina, 7-5, 6-3, and Cordell defeated Jennifer Hodgman of Iowa by the same tally.
Junior Alison Ojeda won her second straight match to take fifth place in the first flight, defeating Toni Neykova of Iowa, 7-5, 6-4. In flight No. 2, sophomore Vilmarie Castellvi followed Ojeda's lead, taking fifth place with a 7-6, 6-1, in the championship match. Junior Kim Gates finished in second place of the fourth flight.
The sixth flight saw senior Catherine Hall finish fifth, recording her second straight victory, a 6-1, 6-2 domination of Furman's Lauren Welch.
In the doubles draw, which concluded on Saturday, the UT pair of Ojeda and Castellvi took home the first flight doubles championship and tandem of Gates and Cleveland picked up fifth place in the second flight of doubles action while Wiski and Cordell picked up the championship in the third doubles flight.
The Lady Vols return to action next weekend when the team travels to Las Vegas to the UNLV Tournament. The tournament will be played from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1.
