Forty-five members of the UT men's and women's crew team traveled to Chattanooga last weekend for the Tennessee Indoor Rowing Championships.
The 2,000-meter races, conducted on ergometers, or rowing machines, featured competition between several southern schools, including Alabama, Chattanooga, Emory, Clemson, Georgia State and Vanderbilt.
The Vols entered team members in every category. Jeremy Chandler (never-ever classification), Amy Robinson (novice), Brian Waller (open) and Ryan Hawk (open) all made the finals in their respective categories.
Nearly the entire team notched personal bests, some topping their old marks by over 20 seconds.
The team will open their outdoor season on March 3 as UT hosts the Tennessee Cup.
The Tennessee lacrosse team opened their 2001 slate last weekend, posting two wins in the Palmetto State over South Carolina on Feb. 2, 12-5, and the Citadel on Feb. 4, 17-4.
Against the Gamecocks, Tennessee got on the board first, when sophomore midfielder Stephen Mackey found a wide open Jason Lewin in the crease. South Carolina held close after the first period, but UT took over in the second quarter, outscoring USC 5-0 in the frame and pushing the Vols to a comfortable win.
Nate Tutt had four saves in the win and Mark Mashie and Mike Driskill led the team offensively, with five and three goals, respectively. Mashie also recorded three assists.
In the matchup with the Citadel, Tennessee jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and was never challenged by the Bulldogs.
Nate Tutt had 10 saves for the Vols. The team was paced by Jason Lewin, with four goals and three assists, and Driskill, who had two goals and two assists.
We've still got a lot of things to work on, UT coach Buff Grubb said, but it was a good way to start of the season.
This weekend should prove to be a lot tougher.
Tennessee takes the field next on Friday as they meet Vanderbilt before returning home for a scrimmage against Division II varsity squad Mars Hill.
The UT racquetball club is currently engaged in a club ladder, meeting Tuesdays from 7-10 p.m., Thursdays 7-10 p.m. and Sundays 3-6 p.m., in the HPER bomb shelter.
Team entries for a mixed-doubles tournament will be taken by Feb. 13. Various club members are also planning on playing in the Valentine Shootout at Court South West on Feb. 16-18. Future events are pending. Players new to the game are welcome to join, especially women looking for some fun exercise. Contact Adam Sikora by e-mail at email@example.com for further details.
