The Tennessee track squads kick off the indoor track season in full force Saturday at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. Unlike the first two limited meets of the season, the Vols will bring a full squad to take on athletes from Appalachian State, N.C. State, Virginia and Virginia Tech in individual competition. The Lady Vols will be sending half of their team to Virginia Tech as well as the Reno Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev.
The guys have been training hard and they need a competitive event, head coach Bill Webb said. It's a perfect meet for us to start our buildup to the conference meet. Virginia Tech has the top facility in the Southeast. It will be the first time Leonard Scott has run this year. He's looked good during workouts. Also, it's the first time we'll be able to get a look at the lap races the 200M dash, the 400M dash and the 800M run.
Meanwhile, Trackwire's preseason and week one rankings place the Tennessee contingent at No. 7 based on scoring predictions for the NCAA Indoor meet. A 12th-place post was the highest ranking the Volunteers received during the 2000 indoor season.
