The seventh-ranked Tennessee tennis team made a valiant comeback from down 3-0 Sunday and defeated No. 46 Alabama 4-3 on their home court. Tennessee improved to 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in SEC play.
The Tide duo of Maxim Belski and William Broyles upset No. 12 Mark Parsons and Adam Carey 8-4 in the No. 1 match. Alabama's Chris McRae and Chris Gostek then clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over the Vols Mario Toledo and Andy Crews.
Alabama also started well in the singles segment, winning the first two completed matches to go up 3-0 in the match. The Tide's Maxim Belski struck first defeating the Vol's Mark Parsons in the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-1. No. 71 Belski represents the fourth straight loss for No. 98 Parsons against ranked foes. Alabama's Chris Gostek then won a third point for the Tide with a 6-3, 6-4 upset victory over No. 83 Mario Toledo. That was where the Tide's run would end.
Tennessee stormed back to take the last four matches led by junior Adam Carey who won his tenth match in his last 12 outings. Carey defeated Alabama's Susheel Narla in the No. 2 match 6-4, 6-4. No. 33 Peter Handoyo won his fourth straight match, defeating the tide's Stephen Mitchell 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 match. No. 68 Paul Podbury made quick work of Chris McRae in the No. 5 match, winning 6-2, 6-3. Then Vol freshman Simon Rea clinched the victory for the Vols with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Christian Broderson.
The Lady Vol tennis team posted a 6-1 win at Arkansas on Sunday.
Sophomore Vilmarie Castellvi and junior Kim Gates played together for the third straight match and picked up their second victory, downing UA's Chin Bee Khoo and Brenda Vlasak 8-3 at the No. 1 slot.
The new pairing of junior Alison Ojeda and sophomore Crystal Cleveland delivered the No. 2 match, with an 8-3 win over Ferreria-Reid. The UT tandem of junior Agnes Wiski and freshman Brooke Cordell dropped the No. 3 match, 8-4 to Boyadjieva-Lopez.
In singles, Ojeda fell to No. 26 Chin Bee Khoo, 5-7, 6-0 1-0 (2), forfeiting Arkansas' only point. Gates upset No. 98 Julia Boyadjieva in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Castellvi dropped the first set at the No. 3 singles match, but rallied to take the match from Brenda Vlasak, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4).
The rest of the UT lineup cruised to straight-set wins. Wiski downed Adriana Lopez, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 and Cleveland served Megan Ferreria a 6-0, 6-2 setback at No. 5 slot. Cordell captured the No. 6 match, blanking Patricia D'Arcy, 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Vols improve to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the SEC.
