Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer on Tuesday announced former Troy State assistant Greg Adkins as the newest member of his football coaching staff. Adkins replaces Mike Barry, who resigned Jan. 10.
"I am pleased to have Greg Adkins join our staff," Fulmer said. "His duties will be to coach the tight ends, assist Coach (Jimmy Ray) Stephens with the offensive line and serve as recruiting coordinator. He has SEC experience in all these areas and certainly will be an asset to our football program."
Before coaching at Troy State, Adkins spent five years as an assistant at Georgia under Jim Donnan. He coached the Bulldogs' defensive line in 1996 and oversaw tight ends and the offensive line from 1997-2000.
Adkins, who turns 35 next month, maintained his offensive line coaching position at Troy State under Larry Blakeney and added the duties of recruiting coordinator while helping the Trojans make the transition from Division I-AA. TSU went 4-8 this past season in its first full year of Division I-A status after a 7-4 record in 2001.
"Obviously, I'm very excited for the opportunity to come to the University of Tennessee," Adkins said. "I look forward to working with coach Fulmer and the staff, along with the community of Knoxville and the entire Vol Nation."
Adkins officially begins his UT employment Monday.
A native of Cross Lanes, W. Va., Adkins arrived at Georgia with Donnan in 1996 after spending 10 seasons at Marshall as a player and coach. During his tenure in Athens, the Bulldogs posted a 40-19 record in five seasons and appeared in four bowl games.
Adkins coached a pair of NFL draftees on the Bulldogs defensive line -- Jason Ferguson and Jermaine Smith - and All-SEC tight end Larry Brown. Former Bulldogs tight end Jermaine Wiggins also made it to the NFL, playing for the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers.
At Marshall, Adkins was a part of 97 Thundering Herd victories during his 10 years. He was a four-year letterman on the offensive line from 1986-89 and served as team captain during his senior season.
Adkins coached a variety of positions at Marshall, including offensive line, defensive tackles and tight ends. In 1990, he helped with the transition of future two-time, All-America selection Phil Ratliff from defensive line to offensive line. He also was part of the Marshall coaching staff when the Herd led the Southern Conference in rushing defense in 1992 and scoring offense from 1993-95.
Adkins is married to the former Michelle Gillespie of Cross Lanes, W. Va. They have two sons, Nicholas, 6, and Nathan, 3.
