The Tennessee men's club hockey team finished in seventh place at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III National Championship Tournament in Muskegon, Mich., last weekend.
Muskegon Community College, the tournament host, won the championship with a 4-2 win over Hope College (Mich.) on Saturday.
The Ice Vols beat Penn State at Berks 5-4 in overtime in the seventh place game Saturday morning. Tennessee senior Shawn Fowler, the second leading scorer in the nation, delivered the golden goal in overtime.
Fowler also scored the game-winner in a 3-2 win over Arizona State in first round action Thursday. He had seven goals in the tournament.
Fowler's clutch score lifted the Ice Vols into the quarterfinals Friday afternoon, when they lost to rival Georgia, 7-2.
Tennessee held a 2-1 lead before UGA scored two goals in the final two minutes of the second period to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Ice Dawgs capitalized on the momentum swing and added four goals in the third period.
A 9-7 loss to College of the Canyons Community College (Calif.) on Friday night placed Tennessee in the seventh-place game. The Ice Vols held a 7-6 lead over CCCC in the second period before giving up three late goals.
This may have been Tennessee's last tournament at the Division III level, as the team is trying to obtain the finances to move up to Division II next year.
