UT senior Tammy Encina opened the ITA National Indoor Championships with a win over Georgia's Shadisha Robinson Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich. Encina, tabbed No. 27 in the ITA preseason rankings, downed Robinson, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(1), in the tournament's round of 32.
Encina will face ninth-ranked and seventh-seeded Amanda Johnson of Duke in the round of 16 today. Johnson cruised by No. 14 Jessica Carleton of UCLA, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round. If Encina defeats Johnson, she will face either No. 8 Alexis Gordon of Florida or No. 34 Megan Bradley of Miami (Fla.) in tonight's quarterfinals.
