Coming off a solid effort at the 2003 Franklin Street Partners Lady Tar Heel Invitational, the Lady Volunteer golfers jumped back into the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index Ratings Top 25 by earning the 19th-rating in the nation.
Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse Duke remained in the No. 1 spot.
The Southeastern Conference secured six of the top 25 positions with Auburn at No. 5, Georgia at No. 8, Florida at No. 9, Vanderbilt at No. 11, UT at No. 19 and South Carolina at No. 24.
The Pacific-10 locked down three out of the top five slots with No. 2 Arizona, No. 3 California and No. 4 UCLA.
Individually, Tennessee's Jessica Shepley vaulted to No. 27 from being outside the top 50 with an impressive performance at the Lady Tar Heel.
The native Canadian fired a career best 54-hole 220, as well as a personal low 68 during the second round of the North Carolina tournament, and was chosen as the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week
UT continues the fall season when it plays host to the seventh edition of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships at Fox Den Country Club Oct. 19-21.
Lady Vol harriers slip a bit
Despite placing third at the Paul Short Run and finishing ahead of two higher ranked teams over the weekend, the UT women's cross country fell from No. 22 last week to No. 28 in the Oct. 7 FinishLynx/NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country poll.
The Lady Volunteers, who possess a season record of 43-4 after three meets, collected 52 poll points to remain in the top 30 for the second straight week. Among Southeastern Conference schools, UT ranks behind only Arkansas, which fills the No. 19 spot with 158 points.
At the top of the charts, defending NCAA champ Brigham Young maintained the top spot for the fourth consecutive week. The Cougars collected 12 of 13 first-place votes to accumulate 388 points and rank above No. 2 Stanford.
Tennessee will continue training until Oct. 18, when the squad travels to University Park, Pa., to compete in the Penn State National Invitational at 10 a.m. ET.
The 6K competition will be UT's final preparation before it heads into the championship portion of the season.
