Tennessee softball player Monica Abbott pitched three scoreless innings and earned the win in the USA Schutt Elite Team's opening game in the Canada Cup.
The rising sophomore for the Lady Vols, who is one of two SEC athletes on the squad (also Auburn's Sara Dean), allowed only two hits Saturday in her team's 3-0 victory against Chinese Taipei. Abbott's summer team finishes the Canada Cup in Surrey, British Columbia, on July 11.
Three days later, the Salinas, Calif., native will come back to her home state. The U.S. team will play the Champions Cup in Irvine, Calif., from July 14-18.
Abbott earned All-American honors last season for the Lady Vols, who set a school-record with 55 wins. After collecting 45 of those victories from the mound, she also became the first player to ever garner both the All-SEC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year awards.
