Tennessee junior diver Phillip Jones came up one place short Friday of making the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team.
The winner of the 3-meter springboard, Troy Dumais, had already qualified for another Olympic event, which meant a spot on the Olympic Diving Team opened up for second place.
Jones was in second entering the finals Friday night, but he fell behind early to Justin Wilcock and never caught up. He finished in third with 1,073.13 points, 45 points short of a trip to Athens, Greece. Another UT diver also competed in the 3-meter finals in St. Peters, Mo., but freshman Jevon Tarantino started the day in seventh place. Despite his initial position, Tarantino finished with strong dives and finished in fifth with 1,009.26 points.
