Following an outstanding stretch in which she collected five victories and picked up a save as the 12th-ranked Lady Vol softball team increased its winning streak to 12 games, freshman Monica Abbott was named as the SEC Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Over her six appearances in the circle, the left-hander struck out 66 batters over 31.2 innings and registered a 0.00 earned run average. More importantly, Abbott combined with sophomore Stacey Jennings to toss a school-record six shutouts during UT's perfect run to the Lady Vol Classic championship.
The southpaw was chosen as the Most Outstanding Pitcher of the tournament after going 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA and tossing a four-hit, 14-strikeout gem in a 2-0 decision over Tennessee Tech in the championship game.
In her squad's opening tilt of the three-day event, she hurled her fourth no-hitter of year against Liberty and set an SEC record for a seven-inning game with 20 strikeouts. The rookie struck out the first 11 Lady Flames she faced for another school record on her way to the first no-no by a Lady Vol at Tyson Park since Jackie Beavers handcuffed Chattanooga on April 20, 1999.
On the season, the left-hander is 28-4 and has compiled a 0.72 ERA, with 12 solo shutouts and four combined shutouts. She leads the SEC with 375 strikeouts in 203 innings and has limited opponents to a .122 average.
