Coach Bruce Pearl has added the final pieces to the puzzle of his basketball staff with the hiring of Scott Edgar and Ken Johnson.
Edgar, who comes to Tennessee after spending the last three seasons at Alabama-Birmingham, will join the Vols as an assistant coach. He helped lead the Blazers to a 65-34 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances in his tenure at UAB.
“From the very minute I got the job at Tennessee,” Pearl said, “I wanted to add someone to the coaching staff with a wealth of experience, great recruiting contacts in the southeast and who would challenge my thinking in coaching. Scott Edgar was my choice from the very beginning.”
Johnson, who will take over as director of basketball operations, has been with Pearl for six seasons, including the last four at UW-Milwaukee. During their partnership, their teams have combined for a 137-48 record.
“With Ken, you’ve got a terrific role model for our student-athletes,” Pearl said. “He is a tireless worker who is very organized. Ken has been with me the last six years and he knows how I expect things to be done.”
Edgar and Johnson join Tony Jones and Jason Shay, who have been on Pearl’s staff since he was named head coach in March.
Chuck Benson, the lone holdover from former coach Buzz Peterson’s staff, was not retained. He had been the lead recruiter of UT prospects Tyler Smith and Jamont Gordon.
