Junior Lady Vol tennis player Sabita Maharaj earned SEC Player of the Week honors for the second time after she defeated No. 26 Natalie Frazier of Georgia, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The individual victory gave the Lady Vols the win over the then-No. 6 Bulldogs and the fourth spot in the SEC standings, good enough to earn a first-round bye for this week’s SEC Tournament.
With the match tied at 3-3, all eyes turned to center court, where Maharaj, ranked No. 42 in collegiate tennis by the ITA, and Frazier faced off in an epic duel. Frazier started off the match by taking the first set, 6-3, and taking a 2-1 lead in the second set, but Maharaj rallied to win the second set, 6-4.
With the match hanging in the balance, the junior from Gainesville, Fla., delivered a 6-2 win in the third set, leading Tennessee to its second upset of a top-six team in the last eight days.
On the season, the Florida native has earned nine victories over nationally-ranked foes while playing the No. 1 position in each of UT\'s matches this season.
Maharaj and the Lady Vols, currently ranked No. 20, now look to the postseason and the SEC Tournament, which starts Thursday in Tuscaloosa, Ala. UT will take on the winner of Thursday\'s Georgia-Auburn match at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
