The University of Tennessee men’s tennis team moved up 15 spots to No. 11 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings following a successful trip to the SEC tournament that saw the Vols win three consecutive matches over ranked opponents.
Tennessee has defeated six teams this season that were ranked higher than the Vols at the time of competition. Last weekend the Vols defeated two opponents ranked higher than them, beating No. 18 South Carolina in the quarterfinals and pulling a major upset over No. 3 Ole Miss in the semifinals.
Ockie Oosthuizen and Ben Rogers returned to the top 10 in the doubles rankings after being absent last week. Oosthuizen and Rogers defeated two opponents at the SEC championships, including Florida’s 10th-ranked duo of Hamid Mirzadeh and Greg Ouellette. The UT sophomores are 29-9 this season and have a 13-6 record against ranked opponents.
Mark Dietrich moved up seven spots to No. 51. The Memphis native avenged an earlier loss to Tom Eklund of South Carolina to help UT defeat the Gamecocks in the SEC tournament. Dietrich has played in the No. 1 slot in singles all season for the Vols. The UT senior finished the SEC regular season 5-6 at the No. 1 position but all six losses were to ranked foes, including three that were ranked in the top 15. All five of Dietrich's wins were over players currently ranked in the ITA singles poll.
