The LSU Tigers are the favorite to win the Southeastern Conference Baseball Championship, as voted by the league’s 12 baseball coaches in this year’s preseason poll.
Tennessee was picked to finish fifth in the SEC Eastern Division, behind South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Vanderbilt. The Gamecocks picked up nine of 12 first place votes, with Georgia getting one and Florida garnering two.
LSU was a unanimous pick among opposing coaches to win the West, grabbing 11 of 12 first-place votes (coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team). Ole Miss got the one remaining vote, followed by Arkansas, Miss. State, Alabama and Auburn.
The Tigers return six starters and all but one pitcher from last season’s College World Series squad.
Baseball season in the SEC gets underway this weekend as Auburn hosts Hofstra for a three-game series at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Ala.
Tennessee’s season begins next weekend at the Minute Maid Classic in Houston with games against Texas A&M, Baylor and Oklahoma State.
