The Lady Vols dropped a pair of matches to ACC rivals over the weekend, falling to No. 15 North Carolina, 5-2, and No. 8 Duke, 4-3.
Saturday’s season-opener at UNC saw Tennessee’s top three seeds fall in singles play, essentially ending any hope of a victory after losing the doubles point, as well.
After spotting Duke a 3-0 lead on Sunday, the 18th-ranked Lady Vols (0-2) won the next two matches to cut the deficit to 3-2. But a loss in No. 2 singles clinched the match for the Blue Devils.
Sabita Maharaj, ranked No. 50 in the nation, defeated 56th-ranked Jackie Carleton of Duke, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 1 singles, while unranked Blakeley Griffith pulled off an upset of No. 108 Jennifer Zika, 7-5, 6-3.
Griffith and Bryce Marable, playing together for the first time, won both of their doubles matches of the weekend.
UT returns to action this weekend with matches at Purdue and Illinois.
