Junior golfer Marci Turner picked up the title of Lady Vol Athlete of the Week today after her performance at the Southeastern Conference Championships this past weekend. Turner’s 212 total over 54 holes earned her runner-up honors for the second consecutive year. It was her best total of the season and in SEC Tournament play. Tennessee placed third with an 886 team score at Old Waverly Golf Course.
Turner was tied for second after the first round of play by carding a four-under-par 68. She then recorded rounds of par on days two and three to finish in a tie for second place. The 2006 All-SEC selection was in first for a while in the third round, but Taylor Leon of Georgia pulled ahead. Turner tied with Georgia’s Garrett Phillips.
The Tompkinsville, Ky., product was named SEC Golfer of the Week on March 22 after placing second at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic. This is her first Lady Vol title of the year; fourth in her three years at Tennessee.
The tenth-ranked Lady Vols will return to the links on May 10 when they face some of the nation’s other top teams at the NCAA Regional Tournament. The sites for regionals are Baton Rouge, La., Ann Arbor, Mich., and St. George, Utah. Tennessee will find out where it is headed on April 30.
