Kentrail Davis continues to light up the scoreboard for the USA National Team. The Tennessee outfielder belted a three-run homer on Sunday over the centerfield wall with two outs in the eighth inning to start a rally that gave Team USA a 7-2 victory over the Columbia Blowfish of the Coastal Plain League at Capital City Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
The shot wiped out a 2-1 deficit with what proved to be the game-winning hit. Davis swung on a first-pitch fastball that shattered his bat but was still able to clear the center-field wall. Davis leads the U.S. squad with six home runs and 19 RBIs.
The win was the National Trials Team’s fifth in a row and improved their record to 8-2 on the season. The final 22-man roster will be announced today.
Left-handed pitcher Bryan Morgado is also trying for a spot on the USA team. The Vols’ Saturday starter earned his first win this past weekend, allowing just three runs on three hits, four walks, and seven strikeouts in four innings of an intersquad game.
Morgado got an assist in the victory from Davis as he hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
In Morgado’s seven innings of work for the team, he has collected 10 strikeouts. The rising sophomore had five double-digit strikeout games and finished with a 5-5 record in 14 appearances for the Vols this past spring while taking Freshman All-America honors. His 104 strikeouts is the second-highest season total ever by a UT freshman.
