It was a good opening week for both Tennessee basketball teams, as the teams notched impressive victories.
The good news continued through Monday. Vols’ freshman Scotty Hopson was named the Southeastern Conference men’s freshman of the week, and the Lady Vols’ Glory Johnson was named the SEC women’s freshman of the week.
Hopson, a freshman from Hopkinsville, Ky., came to UT as the nations No. 5 prospect according to, and he didn’t disappoint. Hopson scored 17 points in only 19 minutes of action against UTC Saturday in the Vols 114-75 victory. He was one of two freshmen to start the game, going 7-11 from the field including 3-6 from three. Hopson also contributed three rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot to the Tennessee cause.
Much like Hopson, Johnson arrived at Tennessee with much fanfare after turning down scholarship offers from the women’s basketball elite to be a Lady Vol. Johnson was only the 11th Lady Vol freshman to ever start an opener, and all she did was record her first career double-double. She went 7-11 from the field en route to 17 points to go along with 12 rebounds.
