The UT Lady Vols indoor track and field team garnered national attention this week as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association selected Tennessee as the 2009 Indoor Track and Field Women’s Scholar Team of the Year. UT was selected based on the combination of both athletic and academic achievement. The Lady Vols won the 2009 Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championship while also recording a 3.230 team cumulative GPA.
The Lady Vols also clinched the 2009 SEC Indoor Track and Field title for the third time in five years en-route to the indoor national title.
In addition to the team award, Lady Vol graduating senior Sarah Bowman earned the NCAA Division I Indoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the year for the second straight year. The Warrenton, Va., native was also named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American for the second year in a row after graduating with a 3.87 grade point average in business with an emphasis in human resource management.
In her career at UT, Bowman earned 10 All-America honors, three NCAA Championships, 12 SEC victories and a world record anchoring the Lady Vols’ 2009 NCAA Champion distance medley relay team.
