Fresh off setting a coaching milestone by reaching 1,000 wins last season, Tennessee Lady Vol basketball head coach Pat Summitt was named the 11th greatest coach of all-time by Sporting News magazine.
In a list compiling the 50 greatest coaches of all-time, Summitt is the third college basketball coach and the highest-ranking women’s coach. She is also the only female coach to make the list.
“I am honored to be named the 11th greatest coach by the Sporting News,” said Summitt in a UT Lady Vols press release. “This is truly a reflection of the hard work put in by all the great assistant coaches and players who have been a part of our program. The fact that I was selected to such a prestigious list by my peers makes the recognition that much more special. The accomplishments of the coaches on this list are awe-inspiring.”
The Sporting News’ list was voted on by 118 Hall of Famers including seven World Series-winning managers, four Super Bowl champion coaches, and the winningest coaches in the NBA, NHL and college basketball.
Summitt holds a 1,005-193 record in 35 years coaching the Lady Vols, including eight national championships.
